Citation Tools
Correct citation is important in all graduate study. By tracking your resources, you’ll be able to not only create the much aggrieved “References” page, but grow a system to document, share, store, and track scholarly resources. Below are a few ideas:
RefWorks Developed by ProQuest, it is the free, University of New England endorsed citation tool. Ref Works can only be used when online.
Zotero is an open source, online reference manager. See the Zotero quick start guide for a list of program features. Zotero is the only software that automatically senses research on the web. Need an article from JSTOR or a preprint from arXiv.org? A news story from the New York Times or a book from a library? Zotero has you covered, everywhere
PERRLA is two things…
It’s software that works directly with Microsoft Word for those who like to write the body of your paper with Word, and works with MLA and APA format. It’s also a complete online solution that lets you write your papers entirely “in the cloud”, using only a web-browser.
Citavi is a reference manager and a tool to keep track of what you’ve highlighted in the reference. The tool allows you to make summary comments, highlight a portion of text and write a summary statement about it. These highlights and summaries can be tagged and viewed as collections. Projects can be in the cloud or on your desktop. The free version supports 100 references, while the paid version does not have such a limitation. There is an add-in for cite as you write functionality in Microsoft Word.
EndNote was one of the first reference managers. It is available as a desktop version with a link to a web instance of your libraries. There is a free, limited version of the software. Anyone who will be using a lot of citations will want to use the paid version. The software integrates with Microsoft Word.
Mendeley works in conjunction with Elsevier for managing and sharing research papers, discovering research data and collaborating online. There are several options: Mendeley Desktop, a PDF and reference management applications which are available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
