What is the Minority Training Program in Cancer Control Research (MTPCCR)?
The MTPCCR is a joint program of the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UCLA School of Public Health. It is a training program that encourages those at the master’s level to consider a doctorate – And shows them how to do it.
Brief Overview of the Program
Three Components of the Program:
- “Careers in Cancer Control Research” 5-Day Summer Institute
Decide if a doctoral program is right for you; acquire the tools needed to apply.
- Paid Internships (Optional)
Intern with cancer control researchers from prestigious California universities.
- Doctoral Application Support Awards (DASA)
Become eligible for awards up to $2,000 for doctoral application expenses.
Who is eligible for this program?
- Minority* students in a master’s level health program or master’s level trained professionals in public health and social/behavioral health sciences.
- Students interested in learning about career opportunities in cancer control (research, education, outreach).
- Students in good academic standing (minimum “B” average) with strong verbal, writing, interpersonal and organizational skills.
* Those communities that experience both an excess and/or unknown burden of cancer and are under-represented in the field of cancer control.
When does this training program occur?
- The Summer Institute is scheduled for June 2-6, 2017 at UCLA and June 17-21, 2017 at UCSF.
Travel stipends are available for out-of-state participants. Allocation is dependent on the number of participants requesting assistance. Please indicate need on application.
If eligible for DASA, you may use the award to apply to a doctoral program at any accredited university.
