QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major coursework in communication, public/community health, education, journalism, OR related fields
AND
Three (3) years of experience in public health education;
OR
A Master’s Degree in Public Health or a Master’s of Arts Degree in Sociology, Community Organization, Education, or a related field
AND
Two (2) years of experience in public health education.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Acceptable experience is defined as work involving the conducting of community surveys to ascertain health needs, preparing educational media materials, promoting health discussions in schools, industry and community agencies and developing cooperation between health specialists, community agencies and education resources for public health education programs.
NATURE OF WORK
This is responsible, professional public health education work. An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing a generalized program of public health education in the Department. The employee assists in the development and implementation of the health program by applying health education principles and techniques to meet the public health needs of the Department. Important aspects of the work are participating in program and policy discussions and consultation with other administrators on program planning and establishment of standards. Work is supervised by an administrative superior who reviews it through conferences, reports and analysis of results obtained.
All employees with the Allegheny County Health Department may be required to respond to public health emergencies including, but not limited to, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, or catastrophic events.
Hours of work generally fall between 8 AM and 5 PM Monday through Friday with potential for occasional evening & weekend hours in the event of a public health emergency.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles of public health and public health education.
Knowledge of the nature and functions of community agencies interested in and contributing to public health.
Knowledge of the facilities, media, methods and techniques of disseminating health education information to the public.
Ability to use initiative, creativity and resourcefulness in gathering data and preparing articles, copy, releases, reports and speeches on public health topics.
Ability to present ideas effectively, concisely and accurately, both orally and in writing.
Ability to interpret public health subjects to community groups and individuals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of mass information media and other agencies, community groups and the general public.
Ability to respond to emergencies.
