PAID INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE with Maine Center for Disease Control and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, Division of Animal Health

Objective: Design and conduct a cooperative education program with epidemiologists from Maine Center for Disease Control (Maine CDC), veterinarians and livestock specialist from Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry Division of Animal Health (Maine DACF) and select 4H /youth agricultural group leaders throughout Maine on zoonotic disease transmission and prevention at Maine’s agricultural events.
Projected Outcome and Population Group(s) Served: Lower incidence of zoonotic disease transmission and increased understanding of ways humans and animals can transmit disease in Maine 4H participants and fair-attending public is anticipated. Goal is to prevent disease outbreaks in both humans and animals, and raise awareness of prevention methods for disease transmission. This internship has the potential to be used as a foundation for a capstone project.
Internship duties may include:
- Develop educational presentations for youth agricultural leader training
- Co-coordinate training event
- Update/adapt educational materials for use at fair events
- Strengthen relationships with youth agricultural groups
- Develop or adapt a youth educational activity for use with 4H, livestock clubs, etc
- Pilot youth leader training activities
- Evaluation of pilot project and efficacy of educational materials
Qualifications: Undergraduates of junior or senior standing, or graduate students in animal science or public health-related field. Strong organizational and communication skills are a must. Experience working with youth and farm animals is desired. Willing to travel locally for agricultural events, and potentially travel to Atlanta, GA for a grantee meeting. Willing to travel to Augusta, ME for work weekly during the duration of the position.
Salary: $13.50/hr, 10 hours per week for 30 weeks. Work-related travel expenses will be paid/reimbursed. Please note, travel to and from Augusta for weekly work will not be paid/reimbursed.
Location: The intern must be able to work from the Maine CDC and/or Maine DACF central offices in Augusta, ME at least one day per week.
