SAGE Campbell specializes in many areas of veterinary medicine using the most current knowledge and treatments available to ensure the highest standards of care for pets. This is made possible through board-certified specialists in surgery, anesthesiology, internal medicine, neurology, oncology and emergency & critical care. We also have a great team of veterinary nurses & assistants, client service coordinators and administration.

Position Description: The veterinary social work intern will report directly to the Veterinary Social Worker. The intern will provide direct services and supportive counseling to clients (pet owners) of the hospital and make referrals to community resources as necessary. At times, consultation and psychoeducation to staff will be requested.

Responsibilities:

1. Meet with clients or make follow-up contact as requested by staff to provide short term, supportive counseling during patient (pet) emergency, hospitalization or specialty appointments.

2. Support clients during end-of-life decision making for their pet and during euthanasia if requested.

3. Provide pet loss counseling and grief education/support to clients; co-facilitate pet loss support group.

4. Link clients with community resources; follow-up on referrals as indicated.

5. Administer assessment tools as needed including but not limited to quality of life, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations.

6. Provide information and consultation to staff as needed re: clients or distressing scenarios (debriefings).

7. Develop resources for practice and present topics relevant to veterinary staff (compassion fatigue, communication, self-care, etc.)

8. Maintain proficient documentation as required by hospital policy.

Qualifications:

1. Must be pursuing graduate studies in the field of social work from an accredited University.

2. Must demonstrate a value system that is in accordance with the interests of the field placement (SAGE) and clients served (adhere to NASW code of Ethics).

3. Must be able to adhere to program policies/procedures (confidentiality, boundaries, professionalism, etc.).

4. Must possess a non-judgmental attitude with an ability to engage with others.

5. Must have a high level of independence and desire to take initiative.
