BSW/Generalist Year Opportunities

Portland locations (22 Bramhall Street and 241 Oxford Street) - primarily supports non-english speaking, new Mainers who are walk ins or "warm hand offs" from outpatient clinics. Students provide case management services including triaging and assessing needs related to basic and healthcare needs, providing general emotional and supportive care, and making resource referrals.

Portland 241 Oxford Street location only - option to provide primarily telephonic health coverage support.
Additional option to carry a caseload and provide case management support to walk-ins (primarily New Mainers) needing assistance with basic needs (clothing, food, transportation and healthcare). This support includes assessing needs, providing general emotional support, and making resource referrals.

Oncology Practices - student works within medical setting to assist patients with gaining access to medication, assisting with applications for co-pay foundations, and referring to other relevant resources.

Biddeford location - student has the opportunity to provide case management services primarily to asylum seekers. Opportunities to collaborate, interact with, and advocate for patient needs for the legal, education, housing, and medical systems

Specialization / 2nd Year MSW Opportunities

Description: The largest and most comprehensive program of its kind in Maine and New Hampshire, our NICU cares for more than 900 newborns a year. Our neonatologists (specially trained physicians who care for newborns) provide 24-hour in-house coverage at the hospital. A 31-bed unit, our NICU includes a team of: Neonatologists, Dedicated in-house pediatricians, Nurse practitioners, Registered nurses, Respiratory therapists. Our NICU is the only one in the state that has the support of the March of Dimes Family Support Program. This program has a dedicated staff person who focuses on the parents and their needs as they go through what can be a very scary and difficult time.

Description: MMC's acute psychiatry area, part of the emergency department (ED), is a 6 bed secure area for the treatment of patients who present to the ED with a chief complaint that is primarily psychiatric in nature. This is staffed 24/7 by a licensed clinical social worker and a registered nurse and often with a psychiatric resident or physician assistant. It can be challenging due to the high acuity, high patient volume, and number of people and systems that impact the time-limited work we do with patients. The appropriate candidate for an internship in the acute psych area is mature, can handle a fast-paced and sometimes pressured environment, has a strong interest in clinical work with individuals with serious mental illness and substance abuse issues, and, ideally, has prior experience in working with the mentally ill and/or in a hospital setting. Students will develop clinical skills in engaging patients, establishing rapport quickly, crisis intervention skills and completing a thorough bio-psychosocial assessment.

Description: P6 is the only inpatient psychiatric program providing multidisciplinary care to geriatric and medically complex patients in the State of Maine. The unit is an extraordinary learning opportunity for advanced year MSW students interested in geriatric mental health and in the interplay of physical and mental illness. Students have the opportunity to facilitate family meetings, provide psycho-education and information about community resources, and make referrals. The student, working closely with the team, refers the patient to the appropriate level of care (e.g., outpatient therapy, partial program, home health services, assisted living, skilled nursing facility, nursing home) and communicates with these after care providers, patient, and family to ensure a successful transition from the hospital.

Description: Program description: The Maine Transplant Program is the only kidney transplant in the state of Maine. The program utilizes a strong multidisciplinary team approach in providing evaluation for transplantation, pre transplant care, transplant surgery, and post-transplant follow up care for life. The program performs approximately 50 transplants each year, a large portion being transplants involving living donors.
