Description: Shalom House helps hundreds of people with serious mental illness each year by providing an array of community-based mental health services and a choice of affordable quality housing where people can escape the stress of homelessness, hunger, and isolation. Serving male and female clients aged 18+ who have a mental health diagnosis and sometimes substance abuse. Student Learning Opportunities: Case management, program evaluation, advocacy, assessments, community education, individual counseling, case documentation, milieu management, family work, conflict resolution, group work.

Site does accommodate Generalist/1st year as well as Specialization/2nd year learning opportunities for both Traditional (32 weeks) & BLOCK (16 week accelerated) practicums hours.

They are looking for:
An MSW intern at Shalom House would have the opportunity to gain experience providing direct support to adults with persistent and severe mental illness, would be exposed to a variety of diagnoses and symptoms (thought and mood disorders, personality disorders, substance use, trauma), and would participate in both providing psychoeducation and engaging clients within their treatment goals regarding activities of daily living, coping mechanisms, correspondence with providers, education, employment, housing, recovery, spirituality, as well as medical or physical health and well-being. This experience would primarily occur within residential treatment settings (e.g., temporary or transitional residences, group homes, supported apartments, assisted living facilities), however, could incorporate involvement with case management and, if/when working alongside a clinician, may also include individual and group therapy. Additionally, the intern would be able to interact with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., counselors, nurses, social workers, housing and subsidies specialists, direct care staff), attend clinical trainings with experienced facilitators (on topics including clinical documentation, medications, personality, psychiatric disorders, self-care, substance use, trauma), and practice completing a variety of forms of clinical documentation, including assessments (diagnostic, needs assessments, psycho-social), referrals, treatment plans, and DAP notes.

Applicant should have ability to communicate and coordinate with agency colleagues and outside providers, have good written and verbal communication skills, and be flexible, organized, and attentive to detail; demonstrate maturity, dependability and the ability to work as a team member, a desire to work with, and ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a population experiencing severe and persistent mental illness; good judgment, ability to set limits, comfort acting as a role model for residents as they learn independent living skills, and demonstrates initiative and decision making skills. Must obtain a yearly flu shot or obtain a medical exemption.
