Description: P6 is the only inpatient psychiatric program providing multidisciplinary care to geriatric and medically complex patients in the State of Maine. The unit is an extraordinary learning opportunity for advanced year MSW students interested in geriatric mental health and in the interplay of physical and mental illness. Students have the opportunity to facilitate family meetings, provide psycho-education and information about community resources, and make referrals. The student, working closely with the team, refers the patient to the appropriate level of care (e.g., outpatient therapy, partial program, home health services, assisted living, skilled nursing facility, nursing home) and communicates with these after care providers, patient, and family to ensure a successful transition from the hospital.

Description: Program description: The Maine Transplant Program is the only kidney transplant in the state of Maine. The program utilizes a strong multidisciplinary team approach in providing evaluation for transplantation, pre transplant care, transplant surgery, and post-transplant follow up care for life. The program performs approximately 50 transplants each year, a large portion being transplants involving living donors. The Program also participates in two national kidney registries where a donor and recipient who are not compatible for transplant can be matched with others across the country. Population served: Adult and pediatric patients needing kidney transplant; living kidney donors.

Description: Maine State Prison includes high maximum, maximum and minimum security facilities. The maximum security facility houses 450 inmates from all over Maine. Nearby Bolduc Correctional facility with 170 inmates and Maine Correctional Institute with 90 high maximum security inmates. There is a newly developed health stabilization unit for inmates with major mental illnesses). Work with inmates range from serious mental illness to pre-release work with those preparing to return to society. Anxiety about release, adjustment counseling, parenting groups, substance abuse, sex offender work and smoking cessation groups are some possible opportunities.

Mass Behavioral Health Center

Description: The agency is developing a new Partial Hospitalization Program for adults which is schedule to open within the next couple of months (Spring 2023). An adolescent PHP should be opening a month after. This is a high level of care- just below an inpatient setting.Interns in these departments would be offered 1 hr/ week individual supervision as well as 1 hr/day group supervision. Students would work individually with clients to diagnose and treat, as well as be part of a multidisciplinary team. Students would also participate in running groups under the supervision and support of licensed clinicians.
We are also looking for students interested in out-patient individual therapy with children and/or adults. Students would manage a small case load and would receive 1 hr/ week individual supervision as well as 1 hr/wk group supervision.
Students will be encouraged to explore creative ways to engage clients from underserved or marginalized populations in the community.
