Maine Medical Center – NICU

Location: Portland,

This is staffed 24/7 by a licensed clinical social worker and a registered nurse and often with a psychiatric resident or physician assistant. It can be challenging due to the high acuity, high patient volume, and number of people and systems that impact the time-limited work we do with patients. The appropriate candidate for an internship in the acute psych area is mature, can handle a fast-paced and sometimes pressured environment, has a strong interest in clinical work with individuals with serious mental illness and substance abuse issues, and, ideally, has prior experience in working with the mentally ill and/or in a hospital setting. Students will develop clinical skills in engaging patients, establishing rapport quickly, crisis intervention skills and completing a thorough bio-psychosocial assessment.
